NEW YORK - A last-minute rush to get what has turned into the hottest ticket in town has pushed the Red Bull Air Race capacity towards its limits ahead of Sunday’s eagerly awaited race over the Hudson River.
There are some grandstand and general admission tickets still available for Sunday’s race, which begins with a two-hour pre-show at 12 noon. But race officials said that there had been a surge in demand on Saturday -- when the world’s 12 best pilots flew their Qualifying session.
“We would see the potential to welcome more guests on the grand stands and standing general admission areas if capacity would allow," said Sarah Zimmermann, a Red Bull Air Race official. "The demand was high and we are very happy with sales performance."
There are a total of 26,000 tickets for the venue at Liberty State Park, where crowds in the grandstands, general admission, the VIP Business Race Club and the High Flyers Lounge will have the best views of the 5.5-km race track and get treated to a range of film clips and instant replays on giant Video Walls set up throughout the area.
But tens of thousands of spectators are also expected to watch the racing that begins at 2 p.m. from the non-ticketed areas such as Ellis Island and over in Battery Park and along Manhattan’s West Side. A total of 40,000 spectators watched Saturday’s Qualifying session, which was won by Austria’s Hannes Arch.
