TOKYO, Japan - World champion Hannes Arch certainly isn’t resting on his laurels after winning the first race of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship 2009 in Abu Dhabi (UAE) in impressive style. Just hours after securing maximum points in the United Arab Emirates the 41-year-old Austrian hopped onto another plane, this time heading for Tokyo, where he was greeted on his arrival with a rapturous welcome.
“It’s just great to be received in this way. I have always been fascinated by the traditions and culture here in Japan. I have to say, it’s been a hard week and I’m pretty exhausted,” commented Arch at a specially arranged press conference in Tokyo’s Auditorium attended by 80 members of the media. “There’s no let up now, we’re already hard at work preparing for the next race in San Diego. But I’m really glad I found the time to come to Japan – thank you for the warm welcome.”
Wednesday saw Arch pay a visit to fellow Red Bull Air Race pilot Yoshihide Muroya at this training base. Under the watchful gaze of dozens of camera teams the reigning world champion gave the rookie valuable tips: “Yoshi has a lot of potential and a very strong character. The first year is always a long learning process and you need time to find your feet.”
