Pilot Quotes - Race Day, New York

Paul Bonhomme (1st) “I concentrated on me, my aeroplane and the track today. With no disrespect for New York, it is pretty big and I put that out of my mind. Now I think we can celebrate a bit though. It's very good and what a setting. I can appreciate the view now I’ve finished racing. Yes, it’s been a great day. I was doing the maths in my head on the plane on the way back and I think we're set pretty good for the last three races.”

Nigel Lamb (2nd) “I never got it together here on this track and I don't know why. I'm very, very happy with the result. When I saw 1:12:06 and the wind had died down for the next guys I thought I'd be 4th. To get second today is fantastic."

Kirby Chambliss (3rd) “I couldn't be happier, well maybe just a little bit if I had won. As an American I'm very, very proud. Thank you New York; it's been great. I tried to fly clean today but I have to personally thank Hannes for hitting that gate like I thanked Nigel in Windsor.”

Hannes Arch (4th) “I think it was a good run. I did exactly what I wanted to do to tighten it up. From what I heard it would have been enough without the penalty. I was just a couple of centimetres out with the pylon but I prefer to lose like I lost here – in style – than to screw it up completely. Actually, I think all of those guys owe me a beer.”

Pete McLeod (5th) “With Paul and Hannes on the track it was a lot to ask for them to make mistakes so I figured I was done for the day after the Super 8. But 5th place is a good result. I kept the penalties out of the mix and I’m happy with that. It was close out there and I didn’t have expectations of winning this race. Overall it’s been a very positive weekend.”

Nicolas Ivanoff (6th) “I was 2 seconds slower than yesterday maybe due to the temperature. The wind wasn’t really an issue today and we had good conditions. I think I lost too much time in the double knife-edge, maybe I took it too wide. I didn’t want to make the same mistake as yesterday, where I turned too early in the gate. I can maybe go 1 second faster maximum and not more. All week I have done almost the same time so the cancelled training wasn’t a problem for me.”

Michael Goulian (7th) “Today was about survival so I guess there is a sense of relief now. I knew we had to push it to try to get into the Final 4 so that’s what I did. It was probably just a little too hard. We were either going to go for it or hit something and that’s the way to do it. It’s not a Final 4 airplane and we just have to push it like crazy to get there. It’s a gamble and I didn’t think I had a penalty but you just don’t know. But that’s the way it is.”

Peter Besenyei (8th) “I was only 1km/h faster than the track maximum speed and it’s very easy for that to happen. It was my mistake of course. The Corvus is nice and before Germany we’ll make some modifications and we have some good ideas about how to improve the plane.”

Alejandro Maclean (9th) “Going into Europe I am going to keep doing the same thing. One of the best things about this race for us is that generally we did most of the runs without penalties. We were very neat in altitude and very stable flying. Now we just have to improve the time and maybe the speed. I’m fairly confident and happy although this season is pretty much over. It has been a really bad season for us.”

Matthias Dolderer (10th) “I don’t know what happened; I just can’t tell you. I need to take some time out and maybe go back to the old aeroplane. I have to think about it. I am disappointed; I don’t know what went wrong. Maybe I’m slower, I just don’t know. I need to sort out how we do things in the future.”

Martin Sonka (11th) “The track was really hot today with high humidity so it’s difficult to say if the time was good. I’m really happy with my flight, we get a point and I had no penalties. The aeroplane flew exactly like I wanted, in the position I wanted it to be in. There were no surprises. We’re in a good frame of mind going into Europe and of course we’d like to get another point. We’d also like to do some work on the plane before Germany.”

Sergey Rakhmanin (12th) “We will plan what we have to do before the Germany race. Now I am very disappointed with our result and it is visible that I flew without penalties and with the right trajectories. Compared to the day before yesterday it’s 5 seconds difference and that is a lot.”
