Yoshihide Muroya retires from Windsor Getty Images for Red Bull Air Race

WINDSOR, Canada – Japan’s Yoshi Muroya has had to withdraw from the Red Bull Air Race in Windsor due to damage to his aircraft and an unsuccessful attempt to get a replacement Edge 540 to Canada in time for the weekend’s race, Team Muroya announced on Thursday.

During a first training run at the Race Airport in Windsor Muroya’s cockpit canopy came unlatched, causing irreparable damage to the canopy. The custom-made canopy could not be immediately replaced. Undaunted by the setback, Team Muroya made every effort to get a replacement Edge 540 to Windsor in time for the weekend’s race.

Muroya travelled to the Zivko factory in Oklahoma with Technician Takashi Nishimura and Team Coordinator Rob Fry to get the replacement plane prepared for the race. They raced against the clock to get the Edge 540 ready to ferry to Windsor but were unable to get the plane race ready and to Canada in time for Friday’s final training session. To be eligible to compete in the June 5/6 race in Windsor Muroya would have been required to have flown in at least one training session in accordance with the sporting regulations.

“The biggest disappointment for the team is that the plane had been worked on for two weeks prior to arriving in Windsor to improve the engine and overall performance,” Fry said. “These changes had shown to be effective during practice and the plane was performing well.“

Muroya was unable to race in Windsor last year as well after hit a pylon during training that caused some damage to a wing’s surface.
