About Nigel
Nigel Lamb has a knack for finishing the year on a high note, achieving podium positions at the final race for the last three seasons. The innovative Brit, who introduced the MXS-R into the Red Bull Air Race World Championship gets closer to the leaders of the pack each year and is optimistic that the latest aerodynamic modifications will make him even more competitive and give him the edge to break into the top 3 in 2010.
Born and raised on a remote farm in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), Lamb’s passion for flying was kindled by his ex-RAF fighter pilot father. At age 11 Lamb first applied to join the Air Force, and persisted until he was finally accepted at 18. After six years in the military flying piston aircraft, helicopters and jets, Lamb began a new career in the UK as an Aerobatic pilot, leading display teams all over the globe including the stunning collection of Warbirds known as the Breitling Fighters.
Highly articulate and always-approachable, Lamb is one of the most experienced pilots in the field. A former military ace, he is one of the fittest pilots in the championship. When on top of his game, Lamb is a delight to watch in the track with a smooth and efficient style.
With such aviation experience always in demand, Lamb has also worked as an aerial coordinator in major film productions such as “Dark Blue World”, “Hart’s War”, and “Waiting for Dublin” alongside the likes of Bruce Willis and Jean Reno. But Nigel Lamb has a fiercely strong competitive streak and he joined the Red Bull Air Race World Championships in 2005 working tirelessly to mesh his flying skills with those of the MXS-R. He emerged as a genuine podium candidate in 2009 even if he was disappointed by the incremental rise in the standings in an increasingly competitive field. Lamb tends to excel on the more difficult tracks.
Between the busy race schedule, Lamb enjoys spending time with his family and whenever possible takes them along to watch him in action. Lamb also enjoys keeping fit and is an enthusiastic deep-sea diver, skier and racquetball player.
THE TEAM
Further refining the setup for 2010, Lamb has a new technician joining team coordinator Rebecca Allen in the hangar. South African Craig Andrews will be responsible for the maintenance and mod program for the Breitling MXS-R. An avid follower of the sport and an experienced aircraft engineer, Andrews brings proven skill and a fresh technical perspective to the team. Lamb believes newcomer Andrews will thrive in the high-pressure environment and is confident the team dynamic is at its best yet.
