When the Red Bull Air Race World Championship rolls into Rovinj, it's entering one of the most beautiful cities on the Adriatic Sea.
Rovinj flourished in the medieval period and some of the medieval city's striking churches, walls and fortifications still stand today. It's not surprising that this picturesque Istrian coastal town, with its brimming galleries, small taverns and restaurants presents one of the top Croatian tourist destinations. We've picked out five must-see things during your stay.
1. Climb the bell tower
Sticking out higher than anything else in Rovinj is the town's lady patron's church – the Church of St Euphemia. Built in 1756, the church represents the biggest landmark of the city, and is one of the top things to see in Rovinj. For those with energy to spare, a trek up the 60m high Venetian-style bell tower is worth its price, with stunning views from the top.
2. Stroll around the Old Town
The Old Town is a must-walk place in Rovinj, offering you the most famous streets of the town in just a half-hour walk. Start in Carrera Street, dotted with tiny shops and pass through to Bregovita Street, which is considered the most beautiful. And Grisia Street will amaze you with numerous galleries and its traditional painting exhibitions. Don't forget your camera!
3. Learn something
Time for some cultural learning! Rovinj has a long fishing tradition and honours this with a museum dedicated to the fisherman's small wooden flatboat of choice – the batana. The House of Batana offers a unique museum experience, but bear in mind that it has limited working hours in the spring.
4. Be at one with Nature
Rovinj locals say you will not regret visiting the Golden Cape Forest Park. It is a protected natural wonder. On the way back why not visit the exceptionally preserved ancient village of Monkodonja which dates back to the Bronze Age and was only discovered in 1953.
5. Enjoy a drink by the sea
Whatever your drink of choice is, after a hardy watching the racing, why not find one of the restaurants by the water and sip a drink whilst watching the sun set over the horizon.
