Muroya makes the Final 4 after tough test

Muroya is back to his best

Muroya in the San Diego track

Yoshihide Muroya has put his Abu Dhabi demons behind him with a fantastic run in the Round of 8 beating Martin Sonka to the Final 4. Matthias Dolderer, Kirby Chambliss and Peter Podlunsek – for the first time in his career – are also through, here's how the heats panned out...

Heat 8
Sonka vs Muroya
Sonka felt he was lucky to get through as the Fastest Loser. He had it all to do if he was to make it through to the Final 4. His run was perfect and he crossed the Finish Gate in 59.492s. It was a quick time for Muroya to beat, although The Japanese pilot's time in the Round of 14 was faster. Muroya was behind after the first lap, but was flying hard to try and keep time. Which he did to see him through to the Final 4.

Heat 9
Kopfstein vs Dolderer
Petr Kopfstein flew clean and smooth throughout his run but a conservative approach to Gate 14 saw him finish his run with a 59.835s. The World Champion couldn't take it easy in his run and his plan was to fly all out in the Round of 8. He flew beautifully and managed to fly his run in 59.105s beating Kopfstein by 0.730s.

Heat 10
Chambliss vs Ivanoff
The two veterans of the Red Bull Air Race went head to head. Chambliss was first into the track, he flew cleanly, but was lucky to avoid penalties for flying high in the gate. He finished his run with a time of 1:00.855. Ivanoff was flying quickly and looked to be going through, but he went through the gate at an incorrect level and picked up a two second penalty and that was the end of his race.

Heat 11
Goulian vs Podlunsek
Michael Goulian was flying very well, but clipped a pylon at Gate 7, making it easy for Peter Podlunsek. Goulian's time of 1:02.118 meant that Podlunsek only had to fly clean to go into the Final 4 for the first time in his Red Bull Air Race career. Podlunsek flew slowly but cleanly and made it through.
