As the last of the Master Class pilots make their way back to the Race Airport after their training runs, it's a clear show of strength from Hannes Arch. He tops the timesheet with 51.063, ahead of Britain's Paul Bonhomme who was 0.546s behind.
The Austrian pilot, who is fourth currently in the standings, will be looking to take the win here in Japan after missing out on the podium at the season opener in Abu Dhabi in February. "I was not super happy because I flew quite risky in terms of possible penalties," said Arch, who was not resting on his laurels after training. "Looking at Paul Bonhomme, who flew much safer lines, yet was only something like a couple of tenths slower than me, I think that's more the strategy I have to come to – to fly it more safe without risking penalties."
