Sonka looking to get back on track

The Czech pilot is looking forward to this weekend's racing

Sonka focused on Chiba

Martin Sonka admits he didn't have a great 2016 season, but his biggest highlight of the the year would be his second place finish in Chiba.

He started this season in much better form, winning the season opener in Abu Dhabi and then finished fifth in San Diego. Now he's looking ahead to Chiba and feels he can get back on the podium. "We know it'll be really hard and a big challenge for the whole team. As we saw in San Diego the competition is tight this year," explained Sonka. "We need to build on our consistency from the last two races. If everything goes well than we believe we can get a good result again," he added.

Sonka, a hugely popular pilot in his home country of the Czech Republic, has kept himself busy since San Diego. "The aerobatics season has started so I've been training at my home base and it's good preparation for the Air Race. I've also been flying some air shows, it's always fun and a great way to meet the fans. I'm always really thankful for their huge support. It gives me, and the whole team, a lot of positive energy. Hopefully we will be able to thank them with a top result here in Chiba," explained Sonka.

Sonka has fond memories of Chiba with his podium finish last year, but he feels he can go one better. "It was almost a perfect race for us. It was one of the races where everything worked well and came together. The only thing we were unhappy with was that Yoshi beat us by one tenth of a second. But to be honest we really felt it was a special moment," said Sonka. "Every pilot wishes to win a home race and once we saw the reaction of the Japanese fans it was a powerful moment for everyone. But Yoshi has now had that experience so we won't be upset if we finish on top this year," he joked.
