Bonhomme retains winning form on Abu Dhabi track

Repeating his success from 2014, British pilot takes the top spot on the first podium of 2015

The podium winners in Abu Dhabi

Britain's Paul Bonhomme took a mighty victory at the season opening round in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi in blistering temperatures along the stunning blue water of the Arabian Gulf on Saturday. His 57.787 time in the Final 4 was just 8/100ths of a second ahead of Australian Matt Hall, who posted 57.871. Canada's Pete McLeod finished in third place with 58.843 and also repeats his 2014 result.

"That was a busy day's work," said Bonhomme back at the Race Airport. "Maybe the other teams are slow coming round the blocks at the start of the season, where our team gets there a bit quicker."

Hall made the most of his revolutionary new "winglets" – 750mm high curved tips on the outer edge of his wings – and equalled a career-best second place. "I'm happy to be on the podium but it's kind of frustrating to be so close to winning. It was just 8/100ths of a second! That's about the length of an aircraft that separated us."
