Hall victorious in Spielberg showdown

Patience and hard work pay off as the Australian pilot celebrates his first race win

Hall got the elusive first win in Spielberg

The spectacular Spielberg Race Day showdown resulted in a first ever race win for Australia's Matt Hall.

The Final 4 action kicked off with Martin Sonka, who had one mission in mind as he flew for the podium in Spielberg. With the former Czech Air Force pilot flying error free in his last run in the track, Sonka set the benchmark with 58.422.

A slower start for Chambliss immediately made extra work for the American, who was racing for his first podium of 2015. An amped performance saw Chambliss fighting with every ounce of his being and he clawed back Sonka's lead as he progressed through the track, finishing with 58.291

It was game on for Matt Hall, who was chasing his first race win of his Red Bull Air Race career in Austria. A perfect start with 198.43kts through the first set of pylons and fast, clean flying set the scene for Hall's last flight of the day. He seemed to find extra speed in the track and raced at a spectacular pace. A controlled performance saw Hall simply storm through the Styrian mountain track and sprint to the Finish Gate with 56.851, putting considerable pressure on Bonhomme.

As the last pilot out on the track at Spielberg, all eyes were on the British pilot as he positioned himself to take the race win from Hall once again. Looking to extend his lead, it was nothing but classic Bonhomme as the split times were in the green as he carved through the first three quarters of the track. Ready to wrap up a fourth consecutive win, Bonhomme maintained his speed and composure, but as he raced for the Finish Gate in the final sprint, the win slipped from his grasp.

After a season of watching and waiting, Matt Hall and his team finally celebrated a well-earned victory and 12 maximum World Championship points. Hall now sits just five points behind Bonhomme in the World Championship standings with two races remaining in the 2015 season.
