Nicolas Ivanoff jumped ahead of Paul Bonhomme into second place in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship with his stirring victory over the British ace in San Diego on May 9/10 and the red-hot Frenchman will be looking to move ahead of championship leader Hannes Arch of Austria in the third race of the season in Windsor, Canada on June 13/14.

Nicolas Ivanoff (1st) was sensational in the air today, showing just how good he can be when he’s fully focused on the track. A penalty-free run in the Final 4 and two record-shattering times for the Frenchman close to the 1:17 mark saw Ivanoff on the top of the podium and 12 points richer. Only his second career victory, Ivanoff was getting the most from his new Edge 540.

Hannes Arch (1st) once again came storming back from far behind to grab the glory. He was lying back in fourth place after Q1 but rallied to snatch the point from Paul Bonhomme, who had led after Q1. Arch pulled out all the stops and out-powered the rest of the field, winning the Qualifying session by a massive 2.20 seconds. Arch is the clear favourite to win a second straight race on Sunday and aiming for maximum points after taking all 13 up for grabs last month in the season-opener in Abu Dhabi.

Reggie Bush, a star running back for the New Orleans Saints and 2005 Heisman Trophy winner, took a ride he will never forget over his San Diego home town on Saturday in a Red Bull Air Race World Championship two-seater. Bush has faced a lot of intimidating defenses on the football field and taken some pretty hard hits. But nothing prepared him for the 7g turns in midair over San Diego.

Austria’s Hannes Arch rallied from behind to post the fastest time in Qualifying on Saturday for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship on Sunday in San Diego and collected the one point up for grabs to widen his lead atop the standings over rival Paul Bonhomme. The British ace had posted the fastest time in the first Qualifying session but Arch, who was only in fourth after Q1, opened the throttle in Q2 to rocket past Bonhomme with a time of 1:18.42.

He’s got a maximum 14 points so far and will be looking to add another 12 if he can win the race here in San Diego on Sunday. Bonhomme is second once again, a full 2.20 seconds behind, and comes up empty handed in the Quali. Bummer for Paul. He’s got 10 championship points and will be wondering how he can catch Arch.

Former Top Gun Matt Hall was treated to a blast from the past when a US Navy F-18 fighter jet landed at the Red Bull Air Race Airport during Friday’s cancelled training sessions. The ‘Hornet’ military jet dwarfed Hall’s new weapon of choice, the MXS-R, as the two sat on the ground together but Hall was pleased to be reacquainted with his old steed.

A fitting tribute was made today in San Diego as Red Bull Air Race World Championship pilots Kirby Chambliss and Nigel Lamb flew alongside one of the city’s most significant landmarks. The USS Midway CVB-41is a decommissioned aircraft carrier which has been turned into an impressive museum that draws huge crowds in San Diego Bay.

Hannes Arch (1st) was clearly pleased with his strong times on the first day on training on Thursday. Even though the Austrian is sometimes a notoriously slow starter, he was third fastest in the morning and a full 1.41 seconds ahead of Britain’s Paul Bonhomme in the afternoon. Arch said he not made any significant changes to the plane that won the season opener in Abu Dhabi. “We’re just trying to figure out our engine, where it runs best with temperature and RPMs,” he said.

A down-to-earth man who literally has a “nuts and bolts” job making sure the race planes are uncompromisingly safe, Judd is the epitome of serenity and remains absolutely unflappable even when some of the pilots might be uttering unprintable language after being told a certain new modification to their plane will not be allowed.
